What is Ultherapy (HIFU)?

HIFU (Also known as Ultherapy) uses targeted ultrasound technology to direct sound waves through the skin to the deeper layers and structures beneath the skin to initiate the body’s own natural repair processes and promote new collagen growth over time.

HIFU uses sound waves, or ultrasound energy to heat up tissue at a focal point, thus destroying the tissue. HIFU works a lot like a light focusing through a magnifying lens to burn a leaf at a focal point. Currently, this is the sole innovation for face lifts. The ultrasound energy is directed to the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) level over the same muscle used for face lift surgery. This causes a shrinking at the SMAS level, similar to needlework but more delicate than a silk lift. Besides the visible effects of lifting and tightening, there is also a less-visible result with the creation of new collagen that helps the skin maintain its youthfulness.

Results can vary from patient to patient. However, the regenerative process is initiated after just one treatment, but the full effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment. In the FDA clinical trial, for instance, nine out of ten patients had a noticeable, significant lift of the brow line. This resulted in reduced skin laxity on the eyelid and a more open, youthful look to the eyes overall. Patients reported firmer, better-fitting skin in other areas of the face and neck as well.
